Banking — daily

Chapter 4

Move money between your own accounts Banking → Transfers

  1. New transfer. Choose the account out and the account in, the date and the amount.
  2. Add the method and reference, and a memo saying why.
  3. Save — this posts immediately and both balances move.

A transfer is only between accounts you own. Money going to someone else is a bill payment, an expense or a vendor advance.

Cheques Banking → Cheques

  1. Record the cheque with its number, date, amount, bank account and direction — issued by you, or received from a customer.
  2. Leave it pending until the bank confirms.
  3. Mark it cleared with the clearing date when it lands, or bounced if it fails.

A post-dated cheque stays pending. Your bank balance only changes when it clears — which is why the cheque list and the bank balance can legitimately disagree.

Reconcile a bank account Banking → Reconciliation

  1. Start a reconciliation for the account and the statement period.
  2. Enter the closing balance from the bank's own statement.
  3. Tick off each transaction that appears on the statement.
  4. Finish when the difference is zero.

If it will not reconcile, the usual causes are: a payment recorded against the wrong account, a cheque marked cleared early, or a bank charge never entered. Do not force it by posting a balancing journal — find it.
